ToxoReTREAT’s PI , Dr. Tijana Štajner, participated as an invited speaker at the Second Serbian Congress of Clinical Microbiology (SKKM 2026), held on March 20–21, 2026, in Zlatibor.

As part of the congress program, Dr. Štajner gave a lecture titled “The Role of the National Reference Laboratory in the Development of Guidelines for Laboratory Diagnosis of Toxoplasmosis,” which presented the importance of a standardized and coordinated approach in diagnosing infection with the parasite Toxoplasma gondii.

The lecture covered:

  • the development of national diagnostic algorithms for at-risk populations, including pregnant women and hematopoietic stem cell recipients
  • the application of modern laboratory methods, including serological and molecular techniques (qPCR), as well as additional biomarkers (MAG1, serotyping)
  • the role of the National Reference Laboratory in coordinating the laboratory network, quality control, and continuous education

As part of the ToxoReTREAT project, which is being implemented with the support of the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, national guidelines for the diagnosis of toxoplasmosis in hematopoietic stem cell recipients are currently being developed.

Participation in SKKM 2026 represents an important contribution to the visibility of the ToxoReTREAT project and its role in improving the diagnosis of toxoplasmosis and strengthening clinical microbiology capacity in Serbia.
