ToxoReTREAT team members from the University of Belgrade – Institute of Physics Belgrade and the Institute for Medical Research, National Reference Laboratory for Toxoplasmosis, have developed a computational algorithm capable of recognizing Toxoplasma gondii brain cysts in microscopic images using fractal dimension analysis.
This new approach upgrades the conventional bioassay for toxoplasmosis, which relies on manual cyst identification, by introducing automated, objective, and efficient image recognition.
The method performs robustly across parasite strains, cyst ages, and host genetic backgrounds, showing promise for wider applications in biomedical image analysis.
