Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic zoonosis because the parasite T. gondii infects humans as well as all warm-blooded animals. People are most often infected by ingesting insufficiently cooked meat of infected animals, as well as vegetables, fruits or water that are contaminated with forms of T. gondii present in the soil. Although cats are definitive hosts for T. gondii, epidemiological data indicate that direct contact with a cat is much less likely to be a source of infection for humans.
Believe it or not, toxoplasmosis is one of the most widespread parasitic zoonoses in the world. Did you know that 25-30% of people worldwide are infected with the T. gondii parasite, and that 20% of the healthy adult population in the wider Belgrade area is infected? Did you know that the immune response limits the infection in the form of parasitic cysts, which are most present in the cells of the brain, heart and skeletal muscles during the chronic phase of the infection? Did you know that none of the available therapeutic options for toxoplasmosis act on parasitic cysts, but they remain in the host’s body practically for life? Did you know that in Serbia there is a National Reference Laboratory #NRL for Toxoplasmosis #imrbelgrade, which is dedicated to expert diagnostics and research of this infection?
You can find out the answers to these and many other questions by watching the reports prepared by the RTS Science Editorial Team about the #NRL for toxoplasmosis and our #ToxoReTREAT project, and by listening to Dr. Tijana Štajner’s guest appearance on the Radio Belgrade show dedicated to science topics, ”Solaris”.
